Position: Django & VueJS Software Engineer
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Preferred start date: As soon as possible
At Pula, we are radically restructuring agricultural insurance, using technology to insure the previously unbanked, uninsured, untapped market of 1.5 billion smallholders worldwide.
In 2019, we facilitated crop insurance cover to over 1.3 million farmers across Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Zambia, Ethiopia and Malawi. In 2020, despite the pandemic, we expanded this to 1.7 million farmers, and doubled our sum insured. At present we work in 12 countries across Africa and Asia, expanding to new countries and continents each and every year.
Pula is fast-paced, constantly adapting to new opportunities and challenges. We are a high-performance, multi-cultural team. We expect our team to value performance, results and professionalism.
At Pula, we are:
We have been funded by venture capital investors (TLCom, Omidyar Network, ACCION, MercyCorps) and global philanthropic institutions (MasterCard Foundation, CGAP/World Bank as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation).
The Pula Innovation Team
Technology is key to Pula’s insurance service delivery. All aspects of our award-winning insurance products are backed by in-house technology, from the design and pricing of our insurance offering, to the widespread field operations that have seen us register over a million farmers every year for over three years running.
In addition to the underlying tooling that enables our business, Pula is constantly exploring new ways to serve our existing customers, as well as potential new areas to apply our existing expertise and technology tooling.
All this software tooling is developed in-house by Pula’s Innovation Team. We are an outfit of product designers, software developers and quality assurance engineers who work on this diverse set of products, using varied tooling but with a focus on Python/Django and VueJS on the back-end, as well as Kotlin & Flutter for our mobile apps.
Our innovation team has a total of 12 members at present, though we will grow closer to 20 in the course of this year. The team is based in Nairobi, but day-to-day we work remotely, with most of our software developers doing the majority of their work from home. We pride ourselves on being a high-performing team, based not only on our technical ability, but our approach to work with an emphasis on collaboration, open communication, and deep understanding of the context in which we work.
The Software Engineer role
To execute on our ambitious product roadmap for 2021, our Innovation team is looking to hire an experienced engineer with deep familiarity with our core web development tooling: Python/Django and VueJS.
Experience with our mobile tooling Kotlin and Flutter would be a bonus, as it would let you work on both our web and mobile stacks. Pula’s web services are deployed on AWS using Ansible, so any past experience with either would also be favourably considered.
The successful candidate will join as a mid-level or Senior Engineer, depending on the skills they demonstrate in our hiring process and the experience they bring.
If this sounds like you, and you are looking for an exciting opportunity to apply your in-depth Python & VueJS towards solving real problems for farmers across Africa and beyond, apply today!
The right applicant would have the following skillset:
Benefits and compensation
Pula will offer a competitive remuneration package to the right candidate with benefits such as pension, health and life insurance as standard. Pula supports remote work with benefits including largely self-scheduled work time, internet allowances, and hardware for working from home.
